Human Biology ( Digestive System) Key Words Flashcards
Digestion
The process of breaking down food with the help of enzymes and other chemicals
Physical Digestion
Also known as mechanical digestion, the food is broken down by chewing the large pieces of food
Chemical digestion
Digestion with the help of chemical substances.
Saliva containing an enzyme starts chemical digestion.
Proteases break down protein
Amylases break down carbohydrates
Lipase’s break down fats
Bolus
Name of the small round slurry mass produced for swallowing which is the result of chewing and chemical digestion
Peristalsis
Wave like muscles on the oesophagus that contract and relax taking the food down to the stomach
Epiglottis
A flap of skin that covers the trachea making sure no food enters the wind pipe
Trachea
Also called the wind pipe, it helps in the respiratory system and has a flap of skin over it called the epiglottis
Amylase
An enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates
Protease
Breaks down proteins
Lipase
Breaks down the fats
Mucus
A slimy substance released by the mucous glands that help in lubrication and protection
