Human Biological Science (Chapter 1) Flashcards
1a) What is Science?
There are two aspects to science. First, science is a process of inquiry- a way of finding out about human beings, and their living and non-living surroundings. Second, science is a body of knowledge- knowledge gained by systematic observation and testing of ideas.
1b) Why is human biology a science?
Human Biology is a science because it is concerned with finding out more about the human species and our knowledge of humans build on the discoveries made by each generation of scientists.
1c) Why is classification an important part of science?
Classification is important to science as it helps to facilitate scientific study.
2a) What is a hypothesis?
A hypothesis is a possible explanation or solution to a problem, proposed by a scientist after which experiments are designed to test the hypothesis.
2b) Why do scientists make hypotheses?
Scientists make hypotheses in order to test a theory by conducting experiments to support the hypothesis.
3) What is a literature review? When would you carry out a literature review?
A literature review is when you search through sources (books, scientific journals, internet) to see what information has already been collected by others, and you would do this while trying to find the solution to a problem.
4) Explain why an experiment must have control.
Without the controlled variable in a n experiment, it is impossible to observe the difference in the results you’ve collected.
