Human Activity Flashcards
Removal of natural vegetation which causes the underground water table to rise. This pushes the salt to the surface. Greatly reduces biodiversity and can make the land completely unhabitable.
Salinity
When once continuous habitats become separated from one another. Small habitats can only support small populations making organisms more vulnerable to extinction.
Fragmentation
Can be introduced unknowingly or deliberately. They pose a major threat to ecosystems, as they often have no natural predators and compete with native species for resources
Introduced Species
How can human activity impact the biosphere?
Habitat Destruction
European settlement and introduced species
Water flow
Fishing
Climate change
Global warming
Biomagnification
Highly persistent pesticides, which cannot be metabolized or excreted, and are stored and accumulate in the fatty tissues of organisms.
