Q

Why did we hypothesise that tourism was bad for the natural environment?

A

Tourisms can have negative impacts on the natural environment. For example, an increase in tourists can mean an increase in litter as there are more people + more tourists mean that there is increased traffic leading to more carbon dioxide levels

Q

How did we collect our data?

A
  1. We carried out surveys to gather the impact and importance of tourism by asking members of the public the purpose of their visit, their method of transport and how much time they would be spending in Keswick
  2. The surveys were multiple choice with a ‘other’ option for most of them
  3. There was a selection of options to choose from
  4. To investigate the damage that tourists can have on the natural environment, we conducted an environmental quality survey for 22 different sites in Keswick
  5. We visited each site and measured litter, vandalism, noise, space, building repair and air quality on a scale of 0-4 with 0 being the best and 4 being the worst.
  6. There were 22 groups of students in total so we took an average of the variables for each group and produced an average EQS score for each site for comparison.

Q

How did we present our data?

A

1) we produced a pie chart to identify their reason for visiting in Keswick town centre to identify any patterns or trends
2)we used radar graphs a to present our EQS scores for that particular site we then stuck these graphs onto a map of Keswick town centre to identify trends

Q

Did we prove that tourists are important to Keswick’s economy?

A

-yes
-47% of people surveyed were in Keswick for tourism. These people are likely to be spending money in Keswick on accommodation, food, services that help the economy of the town.
-62% travel by car so parking fees go to the local council to be spend in the town. -Most people asked (approx. 58) spent under £50 on their visit, but nearly 90 people spent between £50 - £500. This shows that tourists are spending money in the Keswick economy.

Q

Did we prove tourists damage the natural environment?

A

-we proved they damage to environment to some extent
-Overall, environmental quality in Keswick scores highly in most areas. The highest average score is only 2 (out of 4). -Location 19 had the worst environmental quality score - this was outside the fast food outlet Greggs so i likely to be cause by litter.
-Tourists are in Keswick to enjoy the natural beauty so are unlikely to cause significant amounts of damage to the natural environment.

Q

How could have the results been more accurate?

A

1)Timing of visit - conducting the fieldwork during a time when there would be both tourists and locals (i.e. 3 - 7). Or repeating the fieldwork on a weekday and weekend and comparing the results.
2) EQS - this is subjective and scores will be dependant on individual opinions.
This could be made more accurate by agreeing definitions of each score, working in pairs to check accuracy or one person completing all of the different locations.
3)Questionnaires - subjective about who was asked - choose older/ friendly people who may be tourists. To reduce this - could try and approach a balance of people from different ages/ genders (systematic sampling).
