A person in story, poem or play ; occasionally, it is an animal or object given human attributes
CHARACTER
A character whose attitudes and values are affected by the events in the story
DYNAMIC CHARACTER
A character whose personality, attitudes and beliefs remain fixed no matter what kinds of situations he encouters
STATIC CHARACTER
A term used by E.M Forster to denote a character having only a single trait or quality
FLAT CHARACTER
A term used by E.M Forster to refer to a multi-dimensional or a complex character
ROUND CHARACTER
A recognisable, ready-made figure such as a hard boiled detective or a dumb blonde
STOCK CHARACTER
The force that opposes the protagonist
ANTAGONIST
A main character who is less sophisticated, savory or admirable then a traditional hero, usually a character designed to undermine our expectations about heroes
ANTI-HERO
The chief figure in a narrative work who struggles against opposing forces, which are often personified by an antagonist
PROTAGONIST/HERO
The way in which an author presents and defines his characters in a literary work
CHARACTERIZATION
Characterisation through a narrator’s statements or explanation. (telling)
DIRECT PRESENTATION
Characterization through the action and speech of the characters themselves. (showing)
INDIRECT PRESENTATION
A suggestive or symbolic name that identifies the character’s major trait or basic nature.
CHARACTERNYM
The physical location and the specific time or historical period in which an action occurs
SETTING
The vantage point or angle form which an author tells a story and reveals the characters, setting and events
