Hull Machinery Flashcards
Machinery
All machinery installed on waterborne craft, including engines, transmissions, shafting, propulsors, generators, motors, pumps, compressors, blowers, eductors, centrifuges, boilers and other heat exchangers, winches, cranes, steering gear, and associated piping, tanks, wiring, and controls, used for propulsion, for ship services, and for cargo, trade, or mission services.
Transverse frames
A ship frame consisting of a large number of relatively small, closely spaced, athwartship frames, reinforced in the bottom by vertical floor plates and working in conjunction with widely spaced, fore-and-aft, deep girders, such as the keel, longitudinals, and side stringers.
Longitudinal frames
Any of the frames of a ship running fore and aft.
Ribs
any of the transverse stiffening timbers or joists forming the frame of a ship’s hull
Stern tube
A long, circular bearing or bushing which supports the propeller shaft where it emerges from the stern of a ship.
Funnel
A smokestack of a ship.
Controllable pitch
blades that can be rotated around their long axis to change the blade pitch.
bow thruster
transversal propulsion device built into, or mounted to, the bow.Bow thrusters make docking easier, since they allow the captain to turn the vessel to port or starboard side, without using the main propulsion mechanism which requires some forward motion for turning
stern thruster
similar to bow thruster, located at stern of ship
Tugs
A tugboat (tug) is a boat that maneuvers vessels by pushing or towing them.
rudder
A rudder is a primary control surface used to steer a ship, boat, submarine, hovercraft, aircraft, or other conveyance that moves through a fluid medium
Stabilizer
Ship stabilizers are fins or rotors mounted beneath the waterline and emerging laterally. In contemporary vessels, they may be gyroscopically controlled active fins, which have the capacity to change their angle of attack to counteract roll caused by wind or waves acting on the ship.
in ballast
laden only with ballast.
Scantling
Scantling is a measurement of prescribed size, dimensions, or cross sectional areas.
stowage factor
the stowage factor indicates how many cubic metres of space one metric tonne (or cubic feet of space one long ton) of a particular type of cargo occupies in a hold of a cargo ship.
