HUBS191 Flashcards
What are the 4 basic tissue types?
Connective, Muscle, Epithelial, and Nervous
What do you need to know about the Human Tissues Act 2008?
Bodies came from bequests - people made the voluntary choice to donate their body when they were alive.
- Needs dual consent of the person and a family member
- Bodies are held for 18 months
What does superior mean?
Towards head
What does inferior mean?
Towards the feet
What does lateral mean?
Away from the midline
What does medial mean?
Towards the midline
What does distal mean?
Towards fingers/toes (only used for limbs)
What does proximal mean?
Closer to trunk (only used for limbs)
What does anterior (ventral) mean?
Towards the front
What does posterior (dorsal) mean?
Towards the back
What does deep mean?
Further from the surface (skin)

How does the sagittal plane split the body?
Vertically
How does the transverse plane split the body?
Horizontally
How does the coronal plane split the body?
Vertically, front and back
What are the two types of bone tissue?
Cancellous (spongy), and compact
What are the two main parts of the skeleton?
Axial and appendicular
What is the primary function of the axial skeleton and how many bones does it contain?
80 bones - protect and support internal organs
What is the primary function of the appendicular skeleton and how many bones does it contain?
126 bones - movement
What are the 6 main functions of the skeleton?
Support, protection, movement, calcium + phosphate, haematopoiesis, fat storage
Where is yellow marrow?
Appendicular skeleton
Where is the red marrow?
Axial skeleton
What are the 5 key types of bone?
Flat, irregular, sesamoid, short, long
What are limbs made up of?
1 proximal long bone, 2 distal long bones, and hands/feet
Bring fleshy surfaces of body together/ away from each other
Flexion/Extension
Example: elbow
Bringing the foot up/pointing it down
Dorsiflexion/plantarflexion
-only ankle
Moving a limb away from the body/ towards
Abduction/adduction
-hip
Combination of flexion/extension and abduction/adduction
Circumduction
-shoulder
