Q

What is Salmon-Safe?

A

Founded over a decade ago by the Pacific Rivers Council, Salmon-Safe concentrates on ensuring we have clean water—the main ingredient in beer—to support urban and agricultural watersheds. They work with farms and business developments to make certain on-site water is managed in a way that isn’t harmful for our native fish indicator species. We purchase Salmon-Safe hops from farms in the Willamette and Yakima valleys.

Q

How to Throw a Green Kegger

A
  1. Use electronic invitations & decorate with durable and/or recycled materials
  2. Order right amount of beer
    - 2 pints per guest if beer and wine, less if liquor is involved. 7.75g pony keg serves 30-45 pints, 15.5g keg serves 60-90 pints.
  3. Limit trips
    - Hopworks is a “one-stop-shop” with everything you need for the beer side of your party. We stock beer, taps, buckets, ice and cups.
  4. Minimize waste as foam
    - Get keg in place one hour before tapping. Keep keg out of sun and under a thick moving blanket to keep cold in and heat out
  5. Limit ice use
    - Limit your ice use by cooling only bottom half of the keg where beer is drawn from. Use 2 large bags per keg.
  6. Serve your beer responsibly! Durable cups rule!
    - Single use compostable 16 oz. cups. Return to Hopworks for commercial composting only. Even better? Borrow our durable 16 oz. plastic tumblers, rinse and return. Free to use with deposit. Or use your existing glassware from home.
  7. Minimize party waste
    - Lower your waste by conveniently locating and labelling 3 bins for compost, recycling and waste. Don’t be afraid to make it obvious.
  8. Have a great party and enjoy yourself!
19
Q

Reducing Your Impact

A
  1. Recycling
    - Recycling 100 aluminum cans could light your bedroom for two weeks! At Hopworks, ~90% of our waste gets composted or recycled instead of going to landfill.
  2. Sweaters
    - A small adjustment of your thermostat from 72 to 68 degrees can save as much as $10/month on a $100 heating bill. If it feels a little chilly still, it’s a great excuse to wear a warm and cozy sweater.
  3. Weatherize
    - If you’re feeling a draft in your home, caulking cracks, sealing ductwork, and weather-stripping doors and windows can make a big difference.
  4. Laundry
    - Washing clothes in cold water is recommended by many detergents! During warmer and drier months, consider using a clothesline instead of the drier.
  5. Water
    - If you’re in Portland, your water comes from Bull Run and it’s awesome! Even in places where tap water isn’t great, filters and reusable water bottles are much better for the environment than “disposable” water bottles.
  6. Cutting Water Use
    - Low-flow shower heads and sink aerators can save water and money – by not heating that water, you can save $100 or more each year in energy and water. Also, make sure none of your toilets or faucets have leaks!
  7. Efficient Light Bulbs
    - CFLs have come a long way and pay for themselves in 3-7 months. LEDs are great (though expensive) and are also dimmable, which is great for a romantic dinner served with a pint of Hopworks beer!
  8. Furnace Filter
    - Changing your furnace filter can save money by making it easier for your fan to push air throughout your house, plus your air will be cleaner. Depending on what type of filter you have, every three months is about right.
  9. The Commute
    - Are you able to ride a bike or take the bus to work? Carpool with a friend? If you’re driving, check your tire pressure and watch your speed to make that tank of gas last longer.
  10. Give Toxic Chemicals the Boot
    - Lots of household products from air fresheners to cleaners can actually contain harmful chemicals. In addition to being harmful, some chemicals can pollute the soil and water for years to come. There are often great alternatives in the natural sections of grocery stores!
