HtUtM Part 2 Flashcards
Conceptual mind: Definition
A thought that apprehends its object through a generic image
Five types of object
appearing, observed, engaged, apprehended, conceived
Conceptual mind: Function
- to impute names by thinking “This is a table” etc
2. to find the object of meditation, and to hold it (maintaining mindfulness)
How does our realization of emptiness progress from conceptual to non-conceptual mind?
Initially we realize emptiness with our conceptual mind. Eventually we realize emptiness directly, and at this point our conceptual realization transforms into a yogic direct perceiver realizing emptiness directly.
Conceptual mind: Divisions
Those that perceive the generic image through…
- listening or reading
- contemplation of the meaning of that object
- the force of previous imprints
Non-conceptual mind: Definition
A cognizer to which its object appears clearly without being mixed with a generic image.
Non-conceptual mind: Types
- Sense awarenesses
2. Non-conceptual mental awarenesses
Non-conceptual mental awarenesses: Types
- Non-conceptual mental direct perceivers
- Yogic direct perceivers
- Non-conceptual mental awarenesses that are neither of these two
Sense awareness: How generated?
A combination of their dominant condition (common e.g. light, and uncommon e.g. eye sense power) and intermediate condition.
Mental direct perceiver: Types
- induced by sense direct perceivers
- induced by meditation
- induced by neither
Yogic direct perceiver: Definition
A direct perceiver that realizes the true nature of phenomena directly, in dependence upon its uncommon dominant condition, a concentration that is a union of tranquil abiding and superior seeing.
Subsequent cognizer: Defintion
…dependent upon reason…
Recognizer: Definition & Function
Def: a cognizer that realizes what has already been realized through the force of a previous valid cognizer.
Fn: to maintain the continuum of an understanding initially gained by a valid cognizer.
Non-ascertaining perceiver: Example
A new born baby apprehending its father’s face
