HTN Pharmacology Flashcards
How does cGMP cause vasodilation in smooth muscle?
Activates PKG, which phosphorylates MLCK and inactivates it
How do arterial vasodilators relax smooth muscle?
Induce NO formation, which activates GC to make more cGMP
What is a possible complication of starting a patient on alpha-1 adrenergic blockers?
First dose effect
What is “first does effect” with respect to adrenergic blockers?
Orthostatic hypotension, transient dizziness, faintness, palpitations, reflex tachycardia Give first does at bedtime to minimize effects
Where are beta-1 receptors located?
Heart and kidney
Where are beta-2 receptors located?
Lungs, liver, pancreas, arteriolar smooth muscle
What are the effects of beta-1 receptor stimulation?
Increased heart rate, contractility, renin release
What are the effects of beta-2 receptor stimulation?
Bronchodilation, vasodilation, insulin secretion
Which class of drugs can prevent or regress LV hypertrophy?
ACE inhibitors
Which anti-platelet drug is a reversible binder of ADP receptor P2Y12?
Ticagrelor
