HSC, Unit 1, Booklet B Flashcards
What is nature?
Genetic inheritance and other biological factors.
What is nurture?
The influence of other external factors such as social or environmental factors.
What theory is on the nature side of the debate?
Gesell’s maturation theory
What is biological maturation?
A genetically programmed sequence of change.
What are the key points to Gesell’s maturation theory?
•children’s biological maturation
•children move through their milestones at their own pace
•environment had very little influence over development
What theory is on the nurture side of the debate?
Bandura’s social learning theory
What are the key points to Bandura’s social learning theory?
•learning occurs through observing the behaviour of others because children model behaviour
•children may immigrate unwanted behaviours, like hitting
•there are four stages of behavioural learning: attention, retention, reproduction, motivation
What is the stress diathesis model?
A model that explains how stress interacts with genetic vulnerability to impact mental well-being.
What is a genetic predisposition?
A vulnerability that a person is born with. (A person could have a genetic predisposition to mental illness, referred to as a diathesis).
What is an example of stress caused by a life event?
The death of a family member,
Losing a job,
Getting in an accident.
What are examples of diseases that can be used in exams?
Cystic fibrosis, brittle bones, PKU, and Huntington’s
How is cystic fibrosis caused?
A faulty recessive gene, which means that both parents must be a carrier for their children to develop cystic fibrosis.
What causes brittle bones?
Can be passed on from a parent but can also be developed from a genetic mutation.
What is PKU?
A rare genetic disorder that prevents a child from breaking down and amino acid, which damages brain development.
What causes Huntington’s?
It is an inherited neurodegenerative genetic disorder as a risky of a faulty dominant gene.
