What are Traditional Performance Appraisals?
People were accounted for past behaviors instead of performance development. Emphasis on financial rewards or punishments. Only annual evaluation; focus on performance appraisal; superiors evaluate.
What are Current Performance Appraisals?
Frequent feedback instead of annual; focus on the future; has an emphasis on coaching and development; superiors are also evaluated.

Why is The Third Way (Ratings) important in some cases?
Informal feedback and coaching are not appropriate for all sectors. Ratings, instead, may create healthy competition, based on performance and competencies. Going back to formal appraisal but keeping quarterly conversations
