A

July 2016. DFW based to SJT. CRJ 200 FO 12 legs with Tray, 1 turn with Patrick Lyttle with woman who wanted to wait for brother. I had been led into a leadership role during the 3.5 days prior and was naturally still in that mindset. Had to apologize for overstepping. Shows I can acknowledge my mistake.

Q

How would you define a good/great pilot/captain? TMAAT you used those skills?

A

A good captain leads by example, I feel I do this most of the time. Make each crewmember strive to be better. I’ve had captains like this, and I’m trying to be this type of captain.
Involve as many sources for input as possible prior to making a decision. Solid, confident decision with flexibility if factors change. Someone that has all aspects covered, and makes others feel at ease to do their jobs to the best of their ability.

Q

Why do you want to fly for UAL?

A

There are countless reasons I love United Airlines. From the beginning in IAD as a new 121 FO I set my sights on UAL.
First it is the pilot group that I most identify with and want to be a part of. My interactions over the years have by far been the most consistently positive with United pilots. I see them as approach-ably professional. Or professionally approachable. I am this way, and want to be a part of this group. I’ve also witnessed how these same crews interact with the rest of the team, whether gate agents, flight attendants, or ramp personnel, and I’m always impressed by the way these interactions enhance the quality of the product provided to the customers.

Second the innovation United is often at the forefront of whether it be biofuel, or the latest app improvements, or the Connection Saver initiative.

I can not think of a better place to work, where my talents and skills will integrate as well into this team environment.

Q

TMAAT someone lost credibility in you.

A

Winter 2012 or so? Two United pilots ahead of me walking to KCM, they disappeared. Joined me on the people mover, and I asked where they had gone. Evasive. Captain pulled me aside, learned to use more discretion in public view. I really appreciated that he took the time to explain to me why he had avoided the question, and in a kind manner was able to teach me both how to behave, and how to speak up.

I think this happens all the time on different levels, I’ve had many conversations with captains who seem to be less tolerant of others, points out that I seem to give more benefit of the doubt, or simply accept that they have the right to make those choices, Johnny in particular

Q

What motivates you?

A

After doing some research on what motivates people, I chose a few categories that I feel motivate me:

  1. Completing a task - point a to b success/reward
  2. Reaching a goal as a team - complete a pairing as a team, great work team!
  3. Recognition - this is less of a motivator now as captain, but I remember when a captain would say nice job on landing and taking controls, it would make me continue to strive
  4. Helping others - as an active volunteer on the JS committee and hotel committee I really get a boost out of being able to solve an issue for someone

As a global airline, embracing differences in people is important not only bring cohesiveness to the team, but to accelerate the product to the next level of service.

41

50
Q

TMAAT when you had a confrontation, how did you handle it, and what were the results.

A

Just last week at my crasphpad I was indirectly the involved in some confrontation. One resident who seems to help out a little less with pickup/drop-offs was out getting food when someone arrived looking for a pickup unannounced. I informed the arriving pilot that the car was out and that he could possibly get picked up on the way back. Or I could if that didn’t happen. I realized the car was back when I could hear a raised voice downstairs. I went down and listened and then allowed the pilot to get some of his concerns off his chest. I then did the run and

56
Q

TMAAT you gave kudos or positive feedback towards a crewmember.

A

On the CRJ 200 in DFW, often noticed when certain FAs (Lydia Randall) would get a lot of sincere thank yous. I would chime in after pax were gone, that I agreed, they were doing a great job. I’ve noticed you hold this job very dear, and treat these people as family
i. Proud to work with others, credit given

57

Waiting to board. but highlight that all the flights I had operated the day prior were on time. Sensitive area, can not be too defensive if it will just elevate their disdain.

58
Q

A

August 2017. As a hotel committee member, I inspected a hotel in Grand Island, NE which was the sister property of a previous hotel we had used. The rates had been set high as a temporary location, which gave the impression our company would be willing to pay these rates on an ongoing basis, Was able to convince the hotel to submit a revised RFP that was more in-line with company’s goal, and kept our crews in a safer, more conducive area for proper rest on overnight stays

Confirm with Leslie this is a thing. Just recently in EWR a Passenger trying to re-enter aircraft to search for personal property. They had realized while waiting for their gate check bag that they had left their iPad in the seat back pocket. The FA was busily cleaning the cabin on our quick turn and I had just stepped out of the flight deck. The man was trying to get past me to go back to their seat to search. I explained he wasn’t allowed to step back on, but that I would be happy to go take a look for him, what seat? I was able to find it a return it with a smile.

Q

TMAAT when a superior/coworker/subordinate looked to you for direction?

A

January 2020, new member of Hotel Committee, headed out on his first inspection on his own. Asking about interaction with the FAs and company people. Shows Initiative, communication, patience, leadership

63
Q

TMAAT where you learned something from someone and later found yourself using that
knowledge/technique/approach to help you with a situation?

A

2006 While a leasing representative working for Canderel, the Senior VP had really taken me under his wing. I sat in on many meetings that were a little above my pay grade in an effort to teach me as much as he could about how to speak to the decision makers at these companies. To not be all business, but to remain professional, but also to make connections with them. I find this has transferred naturally to both my interactions with hotel management as a hotel committee volunteer, and also when interacting with passengers.

64
Q

TMAAT when someone asked you to do something you felt was unreasonable?

A

Nov 2017 CRJ 700 FO, DFW to CLL, flown with this captain many times. Waldo like #61

A

Dec 2017 Early exposure to Kleid made me wary of what he would be like to fly with, same one cursing on the flt deck
, but he was professional, he was quite nice, joined him in the hotel restaurant to gain more common ground, neither of the other crewmembers joined us
i. Shows that I was making a great effort to get past any preconceived notions, communication, acceptance

A

Backpack on Skylink Sept 2015

69
Q

TMA your favorite leadership trait and the last time you used it.

i. Probably 2017 Maryann confided in me with spider bite, rather than other FA or Capt

70
Q

TMAAT when you encouraged a coworker.

A

Nov 2017 DFW to SAF, CRJ 700 FO. Captain (Zack) didn’t get job that he had recently interviewed for at a different airlines. I had flown with him a number of times, so I knew him fairly well. I was empathetic to his ordeal, stayed optimistic about his future. When we landed in SAF he had a voicemail saying that they were reviewing his file. He ended up getting the job.

71
Q

TMAAT when you were asked to do something unreasonable by a passenger/coworker/superior.

Policy changed to anything within 4000’, begin immediately
Recently submitted an IOR regarding an FOM suggestion
- PD descent vs crossing clearance

73
Q

TMAAT CRM broke down during a flight.

A

Sept 2016 Situational awareness is a vital component of CRM. When situational awareness breaks down, CRM does as well. We had just landed on 35R in DFW. We were taxiing up to 35C and had been told to hold short. Based on taxi speed I suspected the captain had forgotten the clearance, or didn’t realize how close we were. I casually said, we’re not cleared to cross. When no adjustment or acknowledgement was made. I repeated very clearly. We are not cleared to cross 35C. He immediately began braking and was apologetic and thankful realizing how close we came to encroaching on the runway. I was able to communicate my concern.

74
Q

TMAA situation when you had to talk face-to-face with an upset customer.

A

IAD summer 2014, CRJ 200 FO. Met a lady while I was printing out paperwork for a flight. She was asking for direction. I looked at her itinerary and she had bought through a third party a flight that arrived into IAD and departed DCA. Despite the highlighted section, she had no idea what she had done. I began explaining how to get to DCA and she said there was no way she would be able to do it. I explained to her where customer service was to see if they would be able to accommodate a change. I was empathetic, but made no promises.
