How would you describe yourself? How would others describe you?
a. CLAMATOH considerate, level-headed, a good communicator, mature, able to have more than one thing on the go, team player, objective-oriented, hard-working.
b. Loyal, methodical, a rule follower.
Have you ever had an in-flight medical emergency and how did you handle it?
Yes, Miguel Nieto (and Kim FA) Feb 2019 JAN to IAH EMB-145 FO PF, on arrival descent but basically on 30 mile final for 26L in IAH declared medical emergency, stayed fast, taxied fast, EMS met us at the gate, pax stayed seated. All seemed well. But was being observed by EMS when we left, sitting up, with travel companion
What are two of your strengths/weaknesses?
a. methodical, good communicator
b. Desire to fix or solve a problem when being told about a situation, when the person (wife) really just needs to vent, doesn’t really want my solution
How would you rate yourself as a pilot?
a. Solid pilot, no training issues. MEI failure
b. Professional, always learning and improving
TMAAT when you wish something you did had turned out differently.
My interview in Jan 2018 with United. At the time I really felt that I was ready, but have seen areas of improvement since then. New leadership roles, new type rating. Excited for this second opportunity. I didn’t give up, I focused even more energy on achieving my goal.
Out of all the other applicants, why should we pick you?
A true passion to serve customers and co-workers, do not shy away from people that look like they may need direction, A great deal of pride in my company, will do my part and more to maintain the United brand.
What one special quality would you bring to the table if hired?
I truly care. And I feel this shows when I interact with customers, when I’m training, preparing for check-rides.
How would you define exceptional customer service?
a. Generally if things go as customers expected, there are no problems, then it is just as simple as showing them they are important to you, and you are grateful for them choosing your company to fly with
b. Starts with listening and acknowledging concerns if there are any, not dismissing them, or passing them off on someone else as if you just don’t feel like helping
c. Everything reasonably in my control, without affecting others detrimentally, will be attempted to accommodate.
d. With a smile. It must be shown that you actually are going to do everything you can, not just provide lip service.
How would you define a good/great pilot/captain? TMAAT you used those skills?
A good captain leads by example, I feel I do this most of the time. Make each crewmember strive to be better. I’ve had captains like this, and I’m trying to be this type of captain.
Involve as many sources for input as possible prior to making a decision. Solid, confident decision with flexibility if factors change. Someone that has all aspects covered, and makes others feel at ease to do their jobs to the best of their ability.
Why do you want to fly for UAL?
There are countless reasons I love United Airlines. From the beginning in IAD as a new 121 FO I set my sights on UAL.
First it is the pilot group that I most identify with and want to be a part of. My interactions over the years have by far been the most consistently positive with United pilots. I see them as approach-ably professional. Or professionally approachable. I am this way, and want to be a part of this group. I’ve also witnessed how these same crews interact with the rest of the team, whether gate agents, flight attendants, or ramp personnel, and I’m always impressed by the way these interactions enhance the quality of the product provided to the customers.
Second the innovation United is often at the forefront of whether it be biofuel, or the latest app improvements, or the Connection Saver initiative.
I can not think of a better place to work, where my talents and skills will integrate as well into this team environment.
TMAAT you saw a coworker struggling/having difficulties.
Dec 2017, (over Christmas) SAF visual approach with Rebecca, first time for her to SAF. Right from cruise she identified she had a low comfort level, gave her many pointers which she gladly accepted, briefly lost sight of the runway, coached her through the turn
Nathalie said good, now as a captain I will use FO perspective a lot, leadership skill
TMAAT someone lost credibility in you.
Winter 2012 or so? Two United pilots ahead of me walking to KCM, they disappeared. Joined me on the people mover, and I asked where they had gone. Evasive. Captain pulled me aside, learned to use more discretion in public view. I really appreciated that he took the time to explain to me why he had avoided the question, and in a kind manner was able to teach me both how to behave, and how to speak up.
TMAAT you had to work with someone you didn’t like. What did you do to work with them?
First flew with Ken May 2017 Flying with Ken Kleid, many people avoid him, I went in open-minded, showed up extra early to show I take pride in doing a good job, he was very nice. Hotel restaurant, to show him that I was not trying to get away from him.
TMAAT that you did less than your fair share and how did you feel about it.
Summer of 1997. Maybe dumping insulation on Tim in dumpster. I felt
TMAAT when you had to operate under a policy/procedure/regulation that you didn’t agree with.
Fall (June) 2019 Maybe don’t be as specific about timing. EMB 145 FO, TAM to IAH on arrival given discretion descent of less than 5000’ CA told me I needed to descend. After some discussion I complied. Brought it up in upgrade. Found reference. Filed IOR. Spoke to chief about the intent. Sept 2011 for Zurawski
TMAAT you had to deal with change.
Wind down days at ExpressJet, Detroit closure, moved down 37 spots, was professional, worked Christmas. Missed my first Christmas with my new son and a fun one with my 2.5 year old. But I’m a professional and do what it takes.
TMAAT you had offered to help complete a task when you were not asked to do so.
ATTENTION NEEDED. Perhaps Mira to hospital would fit here. Consider using ORF Travalia. CONSIDER A BETTER OPTION. The captain and I both handed up bags to get people on their way in ATL on United Express, no one asked us to, but somehow our Chief received word and thanked us for rolling up our sleeves.
TMAAT you changed your behavior/attitude/personality to work with someone.
ATTENTION NEEDED. when did I first fly with Ken? I think I’m always quite adaptive. I gauge the captain’s tone, and follow suit. As the trip goes on, I will likely relax a little bit, but will continue to allow the tone to be set by the Captain.
Did alter a bit to fly with Ken
TMAAT when someone frustrated/angered you at work.
a. Maybe go with Poor attitude of FA because she didn’t want to be in DFW as she was ATL based, allowed her to vent
b. Ed Dimuzio telling me not to tell the PAX to remain seated, and then telling me to.
i. Empathy compassion, assurance
TMAAT when you went above and beyond with customer service.
Backpack on Skylink Sept 2015
TMAAT when you broke a policy or SOP.
ATTENTION NEEDED. Choose a date, and flight. Forgot to exchange controls to brief, Used to exchange for all briefings, now cruise we don’t need to, but I had beguna descent and maintained control. As I realized I was distracted, I apologized and asked the captain to take controls while I finished the brief.
TMAAT you learned something about yourself from talking with another person.
I think this happens all the time on different levels, I’ve had many conversations with captains who seem to be less tolerant of others, points out that I seem to give more benefit of the doubt, or simply accept that they have the right to make those choices, Johnny in particular
TMAAT you failed to achieve an objective/goal/commitment.
With an airline career in my sights, when I failed my MEI check ride, that was a big blow to me, and concerned me at the time, wanted to have a completely clean training record
TMAAT you made a mistake or learned a lesson in the cockpit.
May 2012, IAD to GSO, cloud deck, too high, broke off approach, go around, safe visual, situation awareness, slow down to go down technique
