Role of HR
- Ensure the organisation has the personnel it needs

Reasons for workforce changes
- To meet increasing demand for existing products
- To develop new products to satisfy demand
- To assist in opening new stores/ factories
- Help enter new markets
- Respond to flexible working arrangements
Why may existing staff leave?
- Respond to falling sales/demand
- To take positions with competitors
- Retirement, sick leave, maternity leave
- The business needs new skills
Steps in workforce planning
-Work out potential demand for its goods or services
-Decide how many staff are needed
-Decide what skills are required
The company analyses the profile of its current workforce to determine the need for new staff and the skills that need to be developed in existing staff
The recruitment process
STAGE 1 - identify a vacancy STAGE 2 - Conduct a job analysis STAGE 3 - prepare a job description STAGE 4 - Prepare a person spesification STAGE 5 - Advertise
Benefits of internal recruitment
- Vacancies are filled quickly
- Employees are know to the organisation
- Employees feel more valued and therefore motivated
- Save money on advertising, training, selecting etc
- Existing employees are already familiar with policies, procedures and culture
Disadvantages of Internal recruitment
- New ideas are not gained
- An employee to fill the vacancy may not be available
- Another vacancy will be created
- May cause conflict among those applying within the organisation
Advantages of External Recruitment
- New ideas and solutions can be brought in with fresh blood
- Large quantities of applicants to be chosen from
Disadvantages of external recruitment
- If existing employees apply and do not get the position they may feel less valued and less motivated
- It can be expensive to advertise
- The person would be unknown and the wrong person may be selected

What are the advantages of interviews?
- Find how the applicant reacts under pressure
- Gives indication of personality and character
Disadvantages of interviews
- Some applicants can train for interviews
- Good applicants may not react well under the pressure
