What is a union?
An organization of workers that collectively promote the interests of its members and negotiates with employers
What is the purpose of a union?
How did they come about?
Represent collective voices of employees
- pay & benefits
- job security
- working conditions
Legally recognized entity
-collective bargaining is legally binding
What are locals in the context of a union?
Fundamental unit of union structure,
they have their own bylaws and constitution,
represents a certain area of the company,
enforces CBA and handles grievances, and collects dues.
Example of parent unions?
Canadian auto workers
Canadian public employees
Organize and coordinate local unions, and support CBA/manage strike funds
Types of unions?
Trade- single occupation regardless where they work
Industry- given industry regardless of the job they do
Public sector- employed by the government
What is the LRC?
Labour relations code
- guards against unfair labour practices- protect employees
- rules for CBA, striking, and resolution dispute
- balances rights of employees and managers
What are overriding principles of labour relations legislation?
- maintain harmonious labour relationship and industry peace
- protect employee freedom of choice
- Maintain employer right to run business as long as not interference with the above conditions.
