HPE Flashcards
HPE
What is the function of muscles
produce movement, maintain posture, stabilise joints, generate heat
What are 3 types of muscle and examples
Skeletal / arms and legs that move example tricep and bicep (voluntary) ,
Cardiac / heart (involuntary),
Smooth / bladder bowel (involuntary)
what are muscle agonist and antagonist?
the muscle contracting/ working is the agonist. The muscle relaxing at the same time is the antagonist
name 2 sets of muscles that are agonist/ antagonist and describe the movements they do
biceps flexes elbow/ triceps extends elbow
Quadraceps extend knee / hamstrings flex knee
name 5 functions of skeletal system
support
protection
storage of minerals
storage of blood
blood production in bone movemenmt
what are the major bones in arm?
Radius/ ulnar/ humerus
what are major bones in the torso?
strernum, ribs, vertebrae
what are the major bones in leg?
tibia, fibula, femur, patella
name 2 types of long bones
tibia, femur, fibula, humerus, radius, ulnar
name 1 type of flat bone
sternum, scapula, ribs, cranial bones
name of type of short bone
tarsal ,carpal bones
name a type of irregular bone
vertebra
name a type of sesamoid bone
patella
name 3 types of joints
immovable fibrous joints
slightly moveable cartiagenous joints
freely moveable synovial joints
what is the role of connective tissues in your joints? eg. cartilage/ ligaments
shock absorber/lubricant / movement/ stabilise joint
what is a compound fracture ?
when the fractured bone protrudes through the skin
name 3 types of connective tissue
tendon/ cartilage/ ligaments
whats the key features of arteries
have thick muscular walls, carry blood away from the heart
what are the 3 key components of the circulatory system?
arterires, veins, capillaries
what are key features of veins
have thin non muscular walls, and carry blood back to heart
what is RBC role?n RED BLOOD CELLS
carry oxygen
what are key features of capillaries?
thin walls, deliver nutrients and oxygen to cells throughout the body and sit in between arteries and veins
what is WBC role ? WHITE BLOOD CELLS
fight disease
what is role of platelets? PLT
help in clotting when you bleed
why does aorta have to be the strongest artery in body?
because it carries the most blood and has to withstand the highest pressure from the heart pump
what is difference between tendon and cartilage?
tendons attach muscle to bone and cartilage is in joints to cushion and decrease friction
what is difference between tendon and ligament?
tendons attach muscles to bone to enable movement and ligaments attach around joints from bone to bone to limit movement
What is EPO
EPO is a performance enhancing drug that simulates red blood cell production which their is more Haemoglobin to carry oxygen.
