How did the Feudal system help William keep control?
It helped him keep control because:
- everyone had someone to answer to
- there is an incentive for people to be loyal (land=money)
- everyone had a clear role
When was the Domesday Book introduced and when did it finish?
It started in 1085 (under William I control) and took a year to collect all the information (finished under William Rufus 1086)
How many towns were visited for the Domesday Survey?
Over 13,418 towns and villages were visited by commissioners and officials
-North East England(did not have complete control), London and Winchester were excluded (too large and complex)
How many books were made of the Domesday Survey?
2, Little Domesday and Great Domesday
- it contained 2 million words
- all copied out by one man in Latin at Winchester
How did the Domesday Book help William keep control?
- Had complete record of land. This helped him solve land disputes and manipulate the Feudal system
- Complete record of property. Helped him raise supplies and money in times of hardship
- Created an element of fear — hence the phrase ‘Domesday Book’
- He knew how many potential soldiers there were
- Knew who tax and how much to tax
What did William do with Military control?

Knights made an oath to their Lord (this didn’t happen in the Anglo-Saxon Feudal system
The Normans also introduced the Marcher Lords
What were Marchers Lords?
- Barons at the border areas of Wales and Scotland (where rebellions were likely) had more power these were known s Marcher Lords (granted more land)
- Independent rulers in their area, prevented any raids from Wales
How did Military control help the Normans rule?
- The king had access to approx. 5000 knights who wee obligated to provide military service
- The king was able to control Barons by creating ‘Marcher Lords! — stoping rebellions
- HOWEVER, the Normans were not able to get complete control of Wales and Scotland
