What is the beat?
A specific area that each constable would have to patrol, using a route that had been given to him by his sergeant. The beat was timed precisely and the constable would be expected to reach certain places, and to be at the beat, at specific times so thst he could be met or contracted if necessary.
During the day the beat was about half an hour. At night the beats were made half aslong. The beat was walked every 15 minutes, how is this a good thing?
This means that the burglars and thieves have less time to carry out crimes during the cover of night

For each division so there was less area to search between them.

What was the trick of using paper between doors?
They would leave strips of paper wedged in the door of places that might be targeted by thieves. If the policemen walk by again and noticed than that the paper is gone, they would investigate further.
