Talks on partition during ww1
1915 the war was going badly for Britain, liberals and conservatives formed a coalition. Carson became minister but Redmond refused which reduced his influence
In 1916 after the Easter Rising Lloyd George reopened negotiations to give up the countries. Promising partition would be temporary while promising Carson it would be permanent
Redmond realised he was conned and refused to deal but it was too late
Lloyd George and partition
In the December 1918 general election sin rein replaced the home rule party in nationalist areas, they wanted a republic which was unacceptable to unionists
When ww1 ended and peace treaty signed in Paris. Lloyd George turned attention to ireland but he talked mainly to unionists since there was no HR or Sinn Fein In Westminster
His solution was home rule all round ie. HR parliament for 6 countries and for southern ireland
Lloyd George wanted all 9 countries of Ulster too balance out and prevent discrimination
What was the government of ireland act 1920?
Passed December 1920 and partitioned ireland into 2 states “northern Ireland” and “southern ireland” which never functioned
In 1921 soon after Lloyd George began negotiating with Sinn Fein they demanded ending partition
Craig was alarmed at this and the conservatives backed him
Lloyd George proposed the boundary commission
What was the boundary commission?
It consisted of 3 men a)one from the north b) one from the free state c) one neural chairman
It was to redraw the border considering the wishes of the people and economic, geographic considerations
Did not work until 1924 because of the civil war, refusal of Craig to name anyone to it
7th November 1925, London papers reported they planned to alter the border a little
How was partition consolidated?
Cosgrave and o Higgins flew to London and agreed to suppress the boundary commission report and leave the government of ireland as unchanged
After 1920 the new states moved further apart
The Irish free state moved away, while the north remained loyal
