Who limited the King’s Power since Magnacarter?
Parliament - No tax or law could be passed without approval
Why were people scared to criticise the King? Give 2 reasons
- The King was chosen by God
- The King was in charge of the legal system and so could have you killed
What was the role of the Nobility?
To enforce law and order on behalf of the King as well as provide an army from tenants
What is Oyer and Terminer?
Commissions sent by the King to hear and determine, punishing those found guilty
How was justice informed in local areas?
By Sheriffs and Justices of the Peace - often corrupt the latter conducting minor court cases
What was the structure of the court system?
The lowest level was handled by justices of the peace, more serious matters were passed up to the court of assizes and then the court of the Kings bench
Why did Nobel feuds increase in the 1440’s?
Henry VI was too weak to enforce order and his mismanagement of government positions prompted personal vendettas
What was the Kings Household?
Those responsible for looking after the King; including the Lord Chamberlain (DOS)
How did the household fuel factions?
Being in the household= influence as you had the Kings attention, thus if it was one-sided it could fuel resentment
What was the Role of Parliament?
Dictated when the king could pass laws or Taxes - Commons saw to it that the commoners were only taxed when necessary
