Why was East Germany set up?
It was set up by Stalin in response to the unification of the three western zones of Germany after the Berlin blockade

Why did the Russians put Ulbricht in charge of the GDR?
He was a German Communist leader with him being in charge of the SED.
The Russians also put him in control as it meant the Russians still held the power and could tell him what to do

The secret police who spied on every element of people’s private lives
How many members of the Stasi were there?
91,000 official workers but many more were informal members who spied on colleagues and family to report to the Stasi

Also known as the NPA it was the normal army for East Germany made up of ordinary civilians
