Testing for Pulse
- find the radial artery on the inside of the patient’s wrist
-Use your index of middle finger (never the thumb)
-Count the number of heartbeats for 1 minute
-quick test count for 20 secs then multiply by 3 (P)
-note pulse deficits (subtract if tested at different areas and rate is different)
Testing Body Temp
-Wear gloves and clean thermometer before use
-Attach the protective cover to the digital thermometer
-Place the tip of the thermometer under the patients tongue on either side of the connecting tendon
-Leave the thermometer in place for 3-5 minutes
-Remove thermometer and record the patient’s body temp to the nearest 10th of a degree
-Re-test 3 times and record the highest temperature from the tests
Testing Respiration
-Observe & record number of complete breathes (inhale/exhale) during one minute (RR)
-depth and quality of respirations, rythm of respirations, regularity of breathes
-30 seconds times 2
Blood Pressure Testing
Ausculation Method
-Listen for heart sounds with the BP cuff
-mark systolic which is first sound you hear
-mark last sound you hear which is diastolic
record systolic/diastolic
(BP) -retest for accuracy
