Q

Students usually justify a low mark with the common phrase, “I did much worse than expected.” What type of biases may lead to such mistakes?

A

Hindsight bias and foresight bias. Hindsight bias is when individuals do not study information because they believe they already know the information. It is when they fall to the bias of “knowing it all along.” Foresight bias is when individuals study something and then automatically assume that when test time comes they will know this information if needed.

A

The two elements are monitoring and control. Monitoring is the process related to assessing one’s learning. Control is the self-regulation of learning based on the information gained from monitoring.

Q

What is the difference between spaced practice and massed practice?

A

Massed practice is another word for cramming. It is when study items/sessions are grouped together into a single session or closely grouped sessions. Spaced practice is the opposite of massed practice and is when breaks are given in between studying items and they are revisited.

Q

Define interleaved practice.

A

Interleaved practice is a type of spaced practice in which studying a concept is followed by studying a different concept. For example, in intropsych, we would be practicing this form of spaced practice if we studied a subtopic of evolution followed by a subtopic of conditioning.
