How to tackle roleplay MMI stations?
1) Find out what your role is in the roleplay (e.g. medical student, junior doctor, friend) and tailor it
2) Eye contact, active listening, slow and clear speech, repeating what the actor has said, don’t talk over them, adjust your tone.
3) Give intro when breaking news
4) Say clearly ‘I’m afraid I have bad news which I have to share with you…’ or ‘I’m in the difficult position of having to tell you…’.
5) Deliver the bad news and, most importantly, pause straight after giving it
6) Give them space to react to the news. The actor may begin to cry or become angry and visibly upset.
7) ‘I know this must be really difficult for you’.
8) If the actor begins to cry, you could offer them pretend tissues or a pretend glass of water if available.
How to tackle professional judgement MMI stations?
1) Make conversation before confronting/asking person.
2) Be sensitive. Ask them how they’re feeling and if you can help.
3) Make sure your tone is understanding and kind, rather than accusatory.
4) Prioritise patient safety.
How to tackle prioritization MMI stations?
1) Take a moment to calm yourself and consider each object or individual given.
2) Consider each selection carefully so you can explain your reasoning to your interviewer.
3) Briefly explain why you didn’t select certain objects.
4) Communicate your thought process aloud.
5) Don’t panic!
How to tackle giving instructions MMI stations?
1) Begin by stating what the goal of the task is
2) Use specific, instructive words e.g. ‘use the shoelace on the left’ or ‘using your right hand, stack the red block on top of the yellow block’.
3) Break task down into small chunks
4) Be ready to re-word what you say to suit the actor’s behaviour
5) Keep calm!
How to tackle calculation and data interpretation MMI stations?
1) Practice your mental maths beforehand.
2) Practice your conversions between metrics.
3) Spend some time establishing what the graph is showing.
What does the x or y-axis show? What are the variables? Is there a sudden rise or decline and what does that suggest?
4) What do you see, and what does that signify? `
How to tackle PBL MMI stations?
1) Make sure you speak up but don’t speak over everyone. Listen to what other people have to say and respond accordingly.
2) Think of the underlying science behind the case. E.g. if someone has broken their leg, don’t just think about how to fix it but also the basic anatomy of the leg.
3) Use what you already know in PBL sessions.
4) Encourage everyone to have their say.
