General structure
• Para 1: Briefly outline the wider context which the
question is pointing to (1-2 sentences). Briefly explain the interpretations in the passages in relation to the
question, bringing out key differences (similarly/contrastingly..). You could indicate which you think is more
convincing.
• Para 2: Apply knowledge to test the interpretation A, showing its strengths and weaknesses. What about it
is convincing, and what about it isn’t?
• Para 3: Apply knowledge to Interpretation B, showing its strengths and weaknesses. What about it is
convincing, and what about it isn’t?
• Para 4: Reach a supported and balanced judgment about which interpretation you mind more convincing
and why.
A good conclusion
A good conclusion will:
1. Reach a clear judgement as to which passage’s view about the issue in the question is more convincing
- Explain why a particular passage is more convincing and why the other is less convincing
- Suggest that there are some parts in both passages which are more or less convincing
- Briefly support the judgment so that it is not simply an assertion.
