How the Himalayas formed Flashcards
What was the first stage?
India moved towards Asia, aided by the subduction zone
Second stage?
India started rotating round and eventually crashed into the Eurasian plate
Third stage?
The subduction zone formed an accretionary wedge and forearc basin
Fourth?
Indian plate subducting under Eurasian plate
Fifth? what did it form?
This formed a large thrust fault (low-angle reverse fault where the lithosphere is being shortened and one is being shoved over the other
What happened to the subduction zone?
Subduction zone eventually broke as both plates were buoyant
This caused volcanism to die
What happened to sediments? Which ones
Mesozoic sediments are being shoved by the accretionary wedge and Palaeozoic stay roughly where they are
What happened to the main boundary fault?
The main boundary fault uplifted the main central thrust fault as India kept pushing North
What did this cause?
This caused uplift in the forearc area and eroded some of the material
The process of uplift kept happening and uplifted the sediment which essentially created the Himalayas
