A

-At the top of hierarchy
-He was the most powerful and demanded obedience in return for protecting his people.
-He needed and army so the feudal system was a way of recruiting soldiers
-The system also brought stability to the kingdom

The barons/lords

A
  • They held their land in return for providing services to the king.
  • The most important service, provide knights for the king’s army.
  • They also served as advisors to the King.
  • High ranking members of the Church, archbishops and bishops were also tenants-in-chief.

A
  • They provided their fighting skills in return granted land. -The knights were usually lords of manorial estates.
  • As many lords held land in different parts of the country, many estates were managed by bailiffs.

  • They had little power.
