How Scrooge Changes Flashcards

Q

Scrooge Makes Cratchit work in the cold.

A

This shows how Bob Cratchit is mistreated by Scrooge due to him being Scrooge’s employee, therefore, meaning he is of a lower rank than Scrooge. This is shown when Scrooge’s fire is compared to Bob’s: “Scrooge had a very small fire, but the clerk’s fire was so very much smaller, that it looked like only one coal. But he couldn’t replenish it, for Scrooge kept the coal box in his own room.

Q

Scrooge refuses to give to charity.

A

Scrooge refuses to donate money to the less fortunate and tells the visitors that if the poor are so desperate they should go to the prisons and workhouses that he puts money into. He still stays by this word after being told that they would rather die: “If they should like to die they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.”

Q

Scrooge is haunted by Marley.

A

Here we see Marley telling Scrooge that he needs to change and forget about his selfish wants or else he will be left with the same fate as Marley; dragging around a chain for his entire life: “I wear the chain I forged in life, I made it link by link and yard by yard.” Here Marley is saying that now he is dead he is carrying around all the bad things he did. He is telling Scrooge to concern himself with other businesses so he doesn’t end up like himself: “Mankind was my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, benevolence were my business.”

Q

Visit from the Ghost of Christmas Past.

A

Here we see Scrooge beginning to change. The Ghost shows himself as a child with his sister. He wishes he was kinder to his sister when she was alive and is now beginning to wish he was kinder to her son- his nephew. The Ghost also shows Scrooge his old workplace. Here Scrooge begins to compare himself to his old Boss - Fezziwig - who is so kind and jolly towards his employees and holds them all a Christmas party. He starts to want to treat Bob better: “I should like to be able to say a word or two to my clerk, Bob Cratchit, just now! That’s all.” Finally, the Ghost shows Scrooge when his fiancee broke up with him due to his obsession with money and riches. Through this, Scrooge begins to realise that material wealth isnt the most important thing in life.
