Q

Free food and quarter

A

Requisitioning if food and proviso. Of accommodation to troops became less of a requirement during this period

Partially due to increased numbers of barracks from 17 in 1800 to 167 in 1812 which was encouraged by the huge increase in troops during the Napoleonic wars (133,000)

Nevertheless billeting in inns and towns continued in the early 1800’s with civilians complaining of drunk soldiers fighting in the streets

Q

Taxes? Indirect and income

A

Increasingly regular during this period
Particularly high in the 1800 to fund the lengthily Napoleonic wars with indirect taxes being imported on an unprecedented number of goods
An income tax from 1802-1815 was imposed to help fund the Napoleonic wars (10% on all income over £200)
It was unpopular and no further income taxes were imposed after 1816 for many years
It was reintroduced in the 1840’s and was temporarily doubled during the Crimean war however it was for a very high income bracket so few actually qualified
