How does training affect performance? - ENERGY SYSTEMS Flashcards
What are the three energy systems used by the body?
alactacid system (ATP/PC), lactic acid system and the aerobic energy system.
In the alactacid system (ATP/PC), how long does ATP provide energy for?
1-2 seconds.
In the alactacid system, when the last phosphate molecule “breaks off” to provide energy what does it leave?
ADP, adenosine phosphate. Useless for energy.
What is the lactic acid system for?
For activities lasting longer than 10 seconds.
What function does the lactic acid system rely on?
The breakdown of carbohydrates to form glucose.
What is the fuel used by the lactic acid system?
Glycogen.
In the lactic acid system, what does the breakdown of glycogen lead to the manufacturing of?
Two ATP molecules and pyruvic acid.
In the lactic acid system, what is pyruvic acid then converted to?
Lactic acid.
What does the aerobic energy system provide for?
Activities lasting 2-3 minutes.
