How can I improve healthcare for my patients? Flashcards
Coursera Week 1
What is social accountability?
WHO defines it as an obligation for medical schools to re-orientate their teaching and the research towards addressing the needs of the community that they’re based in
What four key principles underpin social accountability?
- Forming community and patient partnerships
- Who benefits from the research?
- Are you addressing priority health and social needs of the local community?
- Are you making the best use of available resources and is the project sustainable?
What should every research question and hypothesis be based on?
They should be based on a clinical need and an appropriate primary outcome measure
Ultimately we are trying to benefit patients
What are the six types of critical thinking?
- Information
- Reaction
- Benefits
- Risks
- Possibilities
- Planning
Explain ‘information’
Describe the facts and information
Present the available facts and information about the research from a neutral and objective perspective
Explain ‘reaction’
Describe emotions and feelings about the research – the gut reactions toward it
Focus on the emotional response and not the reason behind these feelings
Explain ‘benefits’
Explain the positive aspects of the research
Approach the research from an optimistic point of view
Explain ‘risks’
Explain the negative aspects of the research
Think about the research cautiously and defensively, focusing on the warnings, risks or cautions. Identify the disadvantages of the research and why the treatments may not work
Explain ‘possibilities’
Describe alternative approaches
Represents the creative thinking part of the discussion so be positive and suggest ideas and alternatives to improve the existing research project
Explain ‘planning’
Discuss possible next steps
Summarise the research, make a decision and discuss the possible next steps
