Because employment increases health,life expectancy, education (quality of life). Post industrial economies (Teeside)
How do places change over time
The function of land is determined by the people living there. The functions change.
E.g rural food production urban retail
Function shifts as 1800’s mid-mechanisation led to people getting jobs in factories in coastal area (connectedness)
Places also change demographically age/culture
Reason places change x5
Physical factors- climate change/ flooding
Accessibility/connectedness-railway cities seen decrease. Essex kent become popular as connections to London
Historical development-some places change slowly but still reflect history Totnes transition town (protect local culture)
Local/national planning- villages to become overrun by spreading of cities. Garden cities.
Other factors- deindustrialisation shift to Asia closure of factories
How do we measure changes
By making judgements of economic development (economic structure/ demographic characteristics) with consequences explored and how land is managed
