What did the City of New York’s 1879 Tenement Housing law require?
In 1879, the City of New York’s Tenement House law required only a narrow airshaft between adjacent structures and only two toilets on each floor. These tenements were notorious for poor living conditions and spurred books and legislation aimed at correcting these conditions.
What did NYC’s 1901 Tenement Housing Law require?
By 1901, the City of New York passed a new Tenement House Law that required toilets and running water in each unit and allowed only 70% lot coverage by the structure. The new law required permits and inspections and provided penalties for noncompliance.
