When is housing shortage present?
When there is insufficient housing to accommodate the population in an area, when the supply of houses cannot meet the demand.
What is homelessness and when is it present?
When there is a lack of regular shelter or when people seek temporary housing.Homelessness is present when people sleep in public areas like on the streets, under bridges or at public parks.
How is there a lack of safe shelter in slums and squatter settlements?
The houses have weak foundations.They have unstable walls and roof made of poor quality materials like zinc and cardboard.Such houses would collapse during a flood or earthquake.Most of the construction materials are flammable and this increases the risk of fire in slums.
What is urbanisation?
Urbanisation is the increase in the proportion of people living in cities.
Why does housing shortage occur?
This is due to rapid population growth caused by migration and high birth rates.The ability of cities to provide sufficient housing may be constrained by competing land use and limited land supply.
What is migration and rural-urban migration?
Migration is the movement of people from one area to another to take up residence for at least a year.Rural-urban migration refers to the movement of people from rural areas into cities to live and worn.
What are the reasons for urbanisation?(push and pull factors)
Push factors: Famine Lack of medical attention Lack of job opportunities Poor educational facilities Pull factors: Better schooling&further education More hospitals & doctors Political stability
How do the high birth rates affect housing?
Some cities experience high rates of natural increase due to high birth rates.Natural increase is the difference between the birth rate and death rate in a year.To cater to the increase in population, the city would need to allocate more resources to housing.
How do the competition of land use affect housing shortage?
With many competing land uses for cities, stiff competition may result in insufficient land being set aside for housing.Land dedicated for one use will not be available for another. Sometimes, a conflict of interest may arise between various groups of people.
How do limited land supply affect housing shortage?
The presence of physical features such as seas and rivers limit the amount of land that can be used to build housing.There is a limit to how much land can be reclaimed from the seas.Hence,there may be insufficient land for housing in cities with small land areas.Cities with high population densities are those with large population sizes and limited land areas.
What does a strong place and meaning mean?
It means the value people attach to a place as a result to their experiences or the unique characteristics of a place.People may attach special meaning to certain places and remember these places fondly.The may have spent much time or had positive experiences there.
What is the Ethnic Integration Policy(EIP)?
It was introduced to promote racial integration and harmony.It includes people of different races in the neighbourhood by specifying an ethnic quota for each block and public housing estate.Living together in a housing estate creates opportunities for interaction among residents from diverse backgrounds.
