What was the layout?

A

Original height of the house is unknown but buildings were legally limited to 60 roman feet- 4 storeys possibly a smaller 5th
Integral staircases from the street to the upper floors
Rooms lit from the outside- cold in winter
Water not supplied to upper floors
Ground floor were shops
Best apartments were first floor
Named after the terracotta relief of Diana in courtyard wall
Central courtyard had covered cistern for water storage
Latrine in the SE Corner of courtyard
Natural light was only available round the south and west sides as it backs into other buildings in the north and east- small inner court was created to provide light to east and north

What was the design?

A

No attempts to cover brickwork with decoration
Elegant marble pool next to cistern
Brickwork of the courtyard was not covered in decoration while some rooms did have mosaics and walk paintings (1st floor)
