HOT: Wind Erosion and the Landforms it creates Flashcards
What three types of wind erosion are there in hot environments?
- Deflation
- Abrasion
- Attrition
What landforms can be created by wind erosion? (4)
- Sand dunes
- Desert pavements
- Rock pedestals
- Yardangs
What is deflation?
Blowing of light materials.
What landform can deflation create?
Desert pavement
How are desert pavements formed?
Surface of STONES resting on finer material. Form when wind/water removes finer material to leave behind LARGER STONES.
What is abrasion?
When wind-blown sand abrades rock surfaces.
What landforms can abrasion create?
Rock pedestals and yardangs.
How are rock pedestals formed?
Isolated PILLAR of rock with an INDENTED profile. Top is case hardened by rising ground water that contains salts. CASE HARDENING is where high evaporation draws water containing SALTS to surface of the rock. Forms a HARD LAYER over thousands of years.
How are yardangs formed?
Steep crested, linear ridges of rock parallel to prevailing wind. Occur in GROUPS. Ridges are SEPARATED by wind-scoured grooves.
What is attrition?
Grains of material are REDUCED in size through collision with each other.
What landforms can attrition lead to?
Sand dunes
How are sand dunes formed?
Formed depending on DIRECTION of the WIND. Sand is transported and deposited by WIND.
