Hot or Cold (Thermodynamics) Lesson 2 Flashcards
1
Q
Thermal expansion
A
The expansion of a material due to an increase in temperature
2
Q
definition of convection
A
the transfer of thermal energy through the actual movement of the molecules with high kinetic energy
3
Q
definition of conduction (thermal conduction)
A
transfer of thermal energy through matter from one molecule to another (without being moved)
4
Q
definition of radiation
A
the transfer of thermal energy through empty space in the form of electromagnetic waves
5
Q
What happens when an object is heated?
The concept of thermal expansion
A
- Increase in kinetic energy.
- Increased movement of molecules now causes them to collide with each other a lot, making them move farther apart. This in turn, causes the material to expand.
Note: This is called thermal expansion!
6
Q
The processes by which thermal energy is transferred.
A
Convection, conduction, and radiation
