Hot Desert Flashcards
What is the case study of a hot desert
Thar/Sahara desert
What are the opportunities of the thar desert
Mining
Energy generation (solar)
Farming
Tourism
How is mining an opportunity
Ores are used to produce a range of things from cement to fertilisers and are therefore valuable.
How is energy generation an opportunity
energy is used to clean water
generate electricity
How is farming an opportunity
Producing crops such as wheat and cotton has created many jobs and generated income for the local economy.
How is tourism an opportunity
important source of income and creates many jobs for local people
Starts the multiplier effect
What are some challenges of the thar desert
Extreme temperatures
Water supply
Inaccessibility
How is extreme temperatures a challenge
It is hard for people to farm, work in mines or as tourist guides-makes development difficult
Farming animals suffer.
Ground is too dry to grow crops
How is water supply a challenge
Without water the development of mining, farming and tourism and therefore the economy would not be possible.
Some parts of the desert have experienced over-irrigation (which has caused water logging of the ground) the excess water has evaporated, leaving a layer of salt on the surface making it difficult to grow crops.
How is inaccessibility a challenge
development is limited
leads to greater differences between rich and poor
What are the ores found in the Sahara
feldspar
phospherite
gypsum
kaolin
