Host Plant Resistance Flashcards
This is any inherited characteristic of a host that lessens the effect of an attack.
Host Plant Resistance
Plant species that are fed upon by insects.
Host plants
The inability of an insect to attack a non-host plant.
Immunity
A host plant which shows lesser damage.
Resistant
A host plant showing more damage.
Susceptible
This type of resistance occurs when there is no heritable trait involved.
Ecological resistance
A host may pass through the most susceptible stage quickly or a time when number of insects are less.
Host evasion
Absence of infestation or injury to the host plant because of transitory circumstances such as incomplete infestation.
Host escape
Increased in resistance temporarily as a result of some changed conditions of plants or environment such as change in the amount of water or nutrient status of the soil or plant.
Induced resistance
It is also termed as true resistance.
Genetic resistance
This resistance is specific to a given biotype.
Vertical Resistance
This is resistance against all the biotypes of insects, known also as ‘non-specific resistance’
Horizontal resistance
When a variety with resistance to a particular pest may confer resistance with another pest.
Cross resistance
Ability of a variety to resist variety of environmental stresses like insects, diseases, nematodes, etc.
Multiple Resistance
It refers to the resistance mechanisms by employed by host plants to deter or reduce colonization of insects.
Antixenosis
It refers to the adverse effect of the host plant on the biology of the insects and their progeny infesting it.
Antibiosis
It refers to the ability of the host plant to give better yield despite of severe infestation of pests.
Tolerance
The morphological and anatomical characteristics of a plant that influence the insect’s preference.
Biophysical Bases
Several inorganic chemicals in plants impart resistance to a wide variety of insect pests.
