Q

What are post-mix dispensing systems? and What are the benefits?

A

Post mix is used for convenient pouring of soft drinks. The carbonated water and syrup/flavour are mixed after they are dispensed.
Benefits: These are usually installed in large businesses. They are much more efficient and cost-effective because of the bulk amounts of carbonated drinks that need to be served to large amounts of customers.

Q

What safety and hygiene concerns need to be taken into consideration regarding post mix systems?

A

Post-mix systems are operating beverage systems that require inert gases. They operate under pressure and can therefore develop leaks, potentially causing a buildup of gas, especially in low-lying areas. Post-mix systems also contain carbon dioxide and nitrogen, which are odourless and colourless gases that can cause asphyxiation. This can occur in minutes.

Q

What are color-coded cleaning cloths? What do the different colours mean? Function? Safe and hygienic use? Cleaning and storage?

A

What- Different coloured cloths are used for different purposes to prevent cross contamination, and to prevent coffee grinds getting into the coffee through the steam wand

Function- ONE damp cloth for benches
ONE damp cloth for steam wand
ONE dry tea towel for cleaning and drying the basket. Blue= general, Green=kitchen areas, brown=barista

Safety and hygiene use- Ensure no cross contamination by using the correct colour cloth for each task for e.g., steam wand, grinder, espresso machine, bench

Q

What are the different types of grinders?

A

Blade grinders- The blades chop the coffee beans. They are not suitable for use with espresso machines as the grind is not even
Burr grinders- These grind the coffee beans between two rotating parts. This crushes the beans into grounds that are the same size, so it is suitable for use with espresso machines
