- use stethoscope

normal adult horse: 8-16 breaths per minute (bpm)
where: flank (towards back of lower stomach) or nostrils
- stand back and use eyes

mucous membrane color

normal adult horse: feel slimy & light pink color
CRT
capillary refill time
capillary refill time
normal adult horse: refill in less than 2 sec
where: press gums and allow them to fill back up with color
- use finger
gut sounds
normal adult horse:
where: top and bottom quarter of flank (top and bottom of back abdomen) on both L and R sides
- use stethoscope
- hear “tinkling” moving sounds
