Horney Flashcards
Horney’s theory?
psychoanalytic social theory
Emphasis on social factors
love
Lack of love =>
=> feelings of threat + insecurity => basic anxiety => neurotic attempts to gain love
Cultural influences - competitiveness:
modern culture = competitive => hostile + feelings of isolation => exaggerated needs of affection => overemphasis on love
Horney = first feminist within
psychoanalytic circle
3 Contradictions
- society emphasizes love & affection => society emphasizes aggressiveness & personal gain
- if we achieve success: happiness => society’s demands on success & achievement are endless
- society tells us we are free - we can accomplish everything => life is unfair: society imposes limits because of social classes & economy
Basic anxiety
deep insecurity + pervasive sense of apprehension (love brings normal feelings of safety & security)
Lack of love =>
=> hostile and competitive society => isolation
OR
=> from parents = neglect, rejection, domination, pampering, & abuse = BASIC ANXIETY (state of unhappiness)
Defences against basic anxiety = neurotic NEEDS
- affection + approval
- partner
- restrictive lifestyle
- power
- exploiting others
- social recognition + prestige
- personal adminration
- ambition + personal achievement
- self-sufficiency + independence
- perfection
Neurotic NEEDS lower
basic anxiety
neurotic TRENDS
- toward people (complaint)
- affection/approval
- powerful partner
- narrow limits - against people (aggressive)
- power
- exploitation
- recognition/ prestige
- admiration
- achievement - away from people (detached)
- self-sufficiency
- independence
- perfection
INTERpersonal means of dealing with anxiety
=> neurotic trends
=> neurotic needs
INTRApersonal (cognitive process) means of dealing with low self-esteem
=> idealized self-image (lack of love - feeling worthless) discrepancy real self self hatred
IDEALIZED SELF-IMAGE
- search for glory
- neurotic claims
- neurotic pride
Conflict between
idealized self-image (glory, claims & pride) <=> real self (low self-esteem)
