- hypothalamus is the master switchboard
- pituitary gland is the master gland

- ACTH- acts on adrenal glands
- Released in response to stress (triggers production of cortisol and epinephrine)
- Adrenal medulla- part of the autonomic nervous system and secretes adrenaline and norepinephrine in a ratio of 4:1
- Adrenal cortex- secretes mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids, sex steroids
