Hormones + Homeostasis Flashcards
How does your body respond to the environment
Using hormones, carried out by the endocrine system
How are hormones secreted
By effectors (glands) in the endocrine system
How do hormones target cells/tissues
Via the bloodstream
Where is adrenaline produced
adrenal gland
What does adrenaline do
Prepares the body for action - ‘fight or flight’ response
Where is ADH produced
Pituitary gland
What does ADH do
Makes the collecting duct walls more permeable
Where is insulin produced
Pancreas
What does insulin do
Causes glucose to be stored as glycogen
Compare the nervous system and the endocrine system
Endocrine system takes longer to respond but has a longer lasting, more widespread effect
What is homeostasis
The maintenance of a constant internal environment
Why do we need to control temperature
Ensures enzymes have enough kinetic energy but also do not become denatured
Why do we need to control water concentration in blood
Prevents damage to cells through osmotic effect (entering - bursting, leaving - shrinking)
Why do we need to control glucose concentration
Prevents strokes, heart disease and high blood pressure
