Hormones Flashcards
hGH ( human growth hormone)
Targets: most cells
Action: promotes growth, cell division & protein synthesis promotes growth of bones.
PRL (prolactin)
Targets : mammary glands
Action : stimulates and maintains milk production.
TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone)
Targets : thyroid
Action : causes the thyroid gland make thyroxine (t4), affects all tissue, increases metabolic rate and regulates growth and development.
ACTH ( adrenocorticotropic hormone)
Targets : adrenal cortex
Action : release of the stress hormone cortisol. Function of cortisol is to raise blood glucose levels.
FSH ( follicle stimulating hormone)
Targets : ovaries and testes
Action : stimulates follicle développement and promotes development of sperm cells. ( puberty)
LH ( luteinizing hormone)
Targets : ovaries and testes
Action : in women : LH is released and stimulates the corpus luteum and releases progesterone
In men : stimulates the production of sperm in the testes
Oxytocin
Targets : uterus, mammary glands
Action : initiates strong contractions, triggers milk release
ADH ( antidiuretic)
Targets : kidneys
Action : increases water reabsorption in the nephron
PTH ( parathyroid hormone)
Targets : parathyroid
Action : stimulates bone cells to break down bone material and reabsorb calcium into the blood.
Aldosterone
Targets : kidneys
Action : stimulates distal and collecting tubules of kidney to increase sodium reabsorption into bloodstream
More sodium = h2O reabsorption = more blood volume /bp
Cortisol
Targets : muscle, liver, fat
Action : stimulates breakdown o protein into amino acids stimulates conversion of AA & FA into glucose.
Increases blood sugar to help recover from stress & repair cells
Estrogen ( ovaries )
Targets : multiple cells
Action : promotes development of female secondary sex characteristics
Progesterone ( ovaries )
Target : uterus
Action : maintains endometrium prevents interior contractions
Testosterone ( testes )
Promotes the development of male secondary sec characteristics
Insulin ( pancreas )
Targets : mostly muscles , liver and body cells
Action : makes cells more permeable to glucose, decreases blood glucose levels
