Hormones Flashcards
ACTH (adrenocorticotropin)
Target organ= adrenal cortex, Zina fasciculata
Effect=mineral corticoids/glucocorticoids
Gluconeogenesis when under stress or not eating (breakfast)
Shuts down immune system
Excess=cushings
Deficiency = addisons
FSH
Must be actively inhibited by inhibin
Target organs= ovary, testes
Effect= females release follicle, releases estrogen (proliferative phase) inhibin made by corpus leuteum
Males stimulates spermatogenesis , inhibin made by Sertoli cells
Excess: multiple oocytes
Deficiency: infertility
Growth hormone aka somatropin
Target organs: all issues except cartilage
Effect: burn fat not carbs
Somatostatin release triggered by hypothalamus, shuts off somatotropin
Somatomedin from liver mediates growth hormone for cartilage
Excess: before puberty gigantism,after puberty acromegly
Deficiency: dwarfism
Lutenizing hormone
Target organs: ovary, testes
Effect: female ovulation,forms corpus leuteum to make progesterone–> secretory phase
Male testosterone
Interstitial cells of leydig
Excess: forms corpus leuteum when levels up
Deficiency: degenerates corpus leuteum when levels down
MSH secreted from pars intermedia
Target organs: melanocytes Effect: basement layer of epidermis Stimulated by uv light Excess: hyper pigmentation Deficiency: albinism
Prolactin
Target organs: mammaries
Effect: makes milk, must be actively inhibited by dopamine
Excess: too much milk
Deficiency: too little milk
Thyroid stimulating hormone
Target organ: thyroid follicular cells
Effect: thyroxin (T4)= 2 try rosiness +4 iodide
Triiodothyronine (T3) made from T4
T3 more powerful, faster acting, l so abundant than T4
Maintains BMR
Excess: graves,heat intolerance
Deficiency: cretinism,hashimoto, myxedema
