What are Hormones?
Hormones are chemicals which are secreted by glands and are transported by the bloodstream to target organs
What does the thyroid gland produce?
Thyroxine which controlls the rate of metabolism
What do the adrenal glands produce?
Adrenaline which prepares the body for rapid activity by increasing the heart rate, sugar in blood and diverting blood to the muscles and brain
What does the pancreas produce?
Insulin which controls blood sugar level
What do the testes produce?
Testosterone which causes the changes at puberty and stimulates sperm production
What does the Ovary produce?
Oestrogen which causes changes at puberty and helps control the menstrual cycle
What does the brain have in relation to hormones?
The brain contains a sensitive gland called the hypothalamus, which controls the pituitary gland
In our exam we will need to remember to two examples of glands and hormones. How many can you name?
- Brain (hypothalamus) - controls the pituitary gland
- Thyroid gland - produce thyroxine
- Adrenal glands - produce adrenaline
- Pancreas - insulin
- Testes - produces testosterone
- Ovary - produces oestrogen
