Hormones Flashcards
Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Secreted by: Anterior Pituitary Gland
Target: Gonads
Use: Stimulate gonads to secrete the sex hormones and regulate growth & development of ova & sperm
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
Secreted by: Anterior Pituitary Gland
Target: Gonads
Use: Stimulate gonads to secrete the sex hormones and regulate growth & development of ova & sperm
Growth Hormone (GH) aka somatotropin
Secreted by: Anterior Pituitary Gland
Target: liver, other tissues and organs
Use: stimulate the liver to secrete growth promoting peptide hormone (insulin-like growth factor-1 or IGF-1)
Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) aka thyrotropin
Secreted by: Anterior Pituitary Gland
Target: thyroid gland
Use: stimulate thyroid to secrete thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3)
Prolactin
Secreted by: Anterior Pituitary Gland
Target: Breast
Use: stimulate development of mammary glands during pregnancy and milk production
Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) aka Corticotropin
Secreted by: Anterior Pituitary Gland
Target: adrenal cortex
Use: stimulate adrenal cortex to secrete cortisol
Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone (CRH)
Secreted by: Hypothalamus
Target: Anterior Pituitary Gland
Use: stimulate secretion of corticotropin (ACTH)
Growth Hormone-Releasing Hormone (GHRH)
Secreted by: Hypothalamus
Target: Anterior Pituitary Gland
Use: stimulate secretion of growth hormone (GH)
Thyrotropin-Releasing Hormone (TRH)
Secreted by: Hypothalamus
Target: Anterior Pituitary Gland
Use: stimulate secretion of thyroid-stimulating hormone aka thyrotropin
Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH)
Secreted by: Hypothalamus
Target: Anterior Pituitary Gland
Use: stimulate secretion of the gonadotropins, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
Somatostatin (SST)
Secreted by: Hypothalamus
Target: Anterior Pituitary Gland
Use: inhibit the secretion of growth hormone (GH)
Dopamine (DA)
Secreted by: Hypothalamus
Target: Anterior Pituitary Gland
Use: inhibit the secretion of prolactin
Oxytocin
Secreted by: Posterior Pituitary Gland
Target: Breast
Use: stimulate contraction of smooth muscle in breasts to result in milk ejection and contraction of uterine smooth muscle until baby is delivered
Vasopressin aka Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH)
Secreted by: Posterior Pituitary Gland
Target: renal distal convoluted tubules and collecting duct and vascular smooth muscle cells
Use: helps blood vessels constrict and helps the kidneys control the amount of water and salt in the body. Decrease water loss and increase blood pressure
