Hormones Flashcards
What are the effects of oxytocin?
Stimulation of mammary glands->milk ejaculation (“let down reflex”) and uterine contractions.
What does ADH (antidiuretic hormone/vasopressin) do?
It causes the kidneys to reabsorb more water from the urine.
How does hgH (human growth hormone) work?
Regulates the growth of bones and tissue by increasing the rate of protein synthesis
What is the role of FSH (follicle stimulating hormone)?
To trigger the production of gametes (sperm and egg) in the male & female reproduction system
What does LH do?
Stimulate the production of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone
What is the role of prolactin?
Stimulation of mammary glands to produce milk during breast feeding.
What is the role of thyroxine?
Increases cell respiration in all cells.
How does PTH affect calcium?
Increases blood Ca+ by removing ions from bones, re-absorption from kidneys and intestine.
What is the function of aldosterone?
Increases Na+, Cl-, & water reabsorption and secretion of K+ in the kidneys. Increases BP
What is the function of cortisol?
Respond to long-term stress by rearranging fatty acids and proteins into glucose
What is the function of calcitonin?
Lowers blood Ca+ by reducing the rate Ca+ leaves bones, intestinal uptake, and re-absorption by kidneys
What is hyperthyroidism?
Excessive production of thyroxin = nervousness, weight loss, sweating, hyperactivity, extra energy
What causes a goiter to develop?
Hypothyrodism: lack of iodine in diet, which makes thyroxine. Over stimulation of thyroid causes swelling.
