Hormones Flashcards
What secretes Adrenocorticotropic hormone? What is the target and what are the effects?
Adenohypophysis, adrenal cortex, causes growth of adrenal cortex and secretes glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids.
What secretes Thyroid stimulating hormone? What is the target and what are the effects?
Adenohypophysis, thyroid gland, causes thyroid releasing hormone to be secreted (TRH)
What secretes Follicle-stimulating hormone? What is the target and what are the effects?
Adenohypophysis. Targets ovaries and testis. In females it causes the maturation of egg which contains follicles and secretes estrogen. In males, it causes sperm production.
What secretes Lutenizing hormone? What is the target and what are the effects?
Adenohypophysis, targets ovaries and testis. In females, causes ovulation and maintenance of corpus luteum. In males, causes secretion of testosterone.
What secretes Growth hormone? What is the target and what are the effects?
Adenohypophysis, targets bone, cartilage, muscle, adipose, and liver. Causes growth and mitosis.
What secretes Prolactin hormone? What is the target and what are the effects?
Adenohypophysis, targets mammary glands and testis. In females, produces milk. In males, increased sensitivity to lutenizing hormone; increased secretion of testosterone.
What secretes Oxytocin hormone? What is the target and what are the effects?
Neurohypophysis, targets uterus. Causes uterine contractions.
What secretes Antidiuretic hormone? What is the target and what are the effects?
Neurohypophysis, targets kidneys. Reabsorbs water in kidneys.
What secretes Melatonin? What is the target and what are the effects?
Pineal gland, targets the entire body but especially the brain. It establishes circadian rhythm and makes you tired.
What secretes Thyroid hormone? What is the target and what are the effects?
Follicular cells secrete thyroid hormone and this hormone targets the whole body. It’s the metabolism hormone.
What secretes Calcitonin hormone? What is the target and what are the effects?
Parafollicular cells secrete calcitonin. It targets the bloodstream and takes calcium out of blood and puts it into the bones.
What secretes Parathyroid hormone? What is the target and what are the effects?
The parathyroid gland secretes parathyroid hormone. It targets the bone and stimulates bone reabsorption. Increases calcium levels in the blood stream.
What secretes Estrogen? What is the target and what are the effects?
Secreted by the zona reticularis of the adrenal cortex. Targets uterus, breast tissue, and benefits hair and skin. It rebuilds the uterine lining after menstruation.
What secretes Progesterone? What is the target and what are the effects?
Secreted by the ovaries. Targets the uterus and other reproductive organs. Maintains uterine lining for the developing embryo.
What secretes Testosterone? What is the target and what are the effects?
Lutenizing hormone causes testosterone to be released. targets sex organs of the male and stimulates male reproductive development. Skeletomuscular growth and sperm production.
